Birth Anniversary: Domenico Scarlatti — October 26, 1685

Born in Naples on 26 October 1685, the sixth of ten children of Alessandro Scarlatti, the city’s maestro di cappella. He wrote more than five hundred single-movement sonatas for harpsichord, the form on which his name now rests, and spent the last twenty-eight years of his life at the Portuguese and then the Spanish court, in Lisbon and Madrid.
