Shielding the Vision: Philipp M. Winter and the Protective Heritage of Uvex, 1926

1. The Foundation (1926)

In 1926, businessman Philipp M. Winter established a trading company in Fürth, Bavaria, focused on protective eyewear. Recognizing the growing need for eye safety in both burgeoning industrial sectors and emerging winter sports, his venture laid the foundation for the globally recognized Uvex brand.

2. Development and Industrial Impact

During the 1920s, worker safety was becoming a more formalized concern across European factories. Winter initially imported protective goggles and soon transitioned to manufacturing his own enhanced designs. His early creations protected not only factory workers and welders but were quickly adopted by mountaineers and skiers navigating harsh alpine glare. In the 1950s, his son Rainer Winter joined the company and coined the brand name “Uvex” (an acronym for UltraViolet EXcluded), cementing the firm’s dedication to high-performance optics and safety helmets.
