In 1923, amidst the industrial density of Essen, Hugo Knümann established a commercial agency for electrical products. This venture rapidly evolved into Phönix Elektrizitätsgesellschaft (now Phoenix Contact), revolutionizing industrial wiring with the invention of the modular terminal block.

2. Development and Industrial Impact

As the electrification of German industry accelerated during the 1920s, the need for safe, reliable, and scalable electrical connections became paramount. In 1928, Knümann, collaborating with engineers from the RWE power utility, developed the first modular terminal block for DIN rails—an innovation that fundamentally simplified electrical cabinet wiring. After their Essen facilities were destroyed during World War II, the company relocated to Blomberg, North Rhine-Westphalia. Under subsequent generations of leadership, it expanded into a global powerhouse of industrial automation and interconnection technology.
