In 1924, in the Swabian town of Nürtingen, engineer Albrecht Schnizler constructed the world's first portable hand-cranked rotary drill for steel, founding Schnizler GmbH. Coining the brand name Metabo from the German term Metallbohrdreher, the company transformed mechanical metalworking and construction sites across the globe, establishing a benchmark of rugged durability, safety clutches, and precision power tooling.

In the turbulent economic aftermath of the First World War, skilled industrial workers in the Neckar basin lacked lightweight, handheld tools capable of boring through toughened structural steel without brittle gear breakage. In 1924, Albrecht Schnizler set up a mechanical workshop in his parents’ former bakery in Nürtingen, joined soon after by Julius Closs and Walter Rauch.
Schnizler designed and hand-machined the No. 18 rotary metal drill (Metallbohrdreher)—a beautifully balanced, enclosed two-speed hand drill with tempered steel bevel gears. The tool proved an instant commercial sensation among German mechanics, shipwrights, and locomotive fitters.
Electrification and the Safety Clutch: A Century of Industrial Might
By the 1930s, Metabo electrified its tool line, introducing the first electric hand drill and heavy-duty angle grinders engineered with the legendary Metabo S-automatic mechanical safety slip clutch to prevent catastrophic wrist injuries during bit jamming.
