In 1929, through the joint determination of the Municipality of Bari, the Provincial Administration, and the local Chamber of Commerce, the *Fiera del Levante* was instituted along the wind-swept western shoreline of Bari. Conceived as Italy's grand commercial gateway to the Balkans, the Aegean, and the Near East, this monumental institution reshaped the urban topography of Puglia, translating ancient Mediterranean seafaring heritage into a triumphal showcase of trade and rationalist architecture.

The Rationalist City of Trade by the Adriatic
While the Milan and Turin fairs served the manufacturing apparatus of northern Europe, Bari was uniquely situated to reign over the Levant. Commissioned in 1929 and inaugurating its first grand exposition in September 1930, the fairgrounds were planned as a self-contained modern city (*cittadella fieristica*). Eminent architects and engineers, including Augusto Corradini, sculpted imposing neoclassical and rationalist pavilions faced with blinding-white Trani stone, wide palm-lined boulevards, and sweeping porticoes facing the azure Adriatic.
From agricultural machinery and olive oil presses to Greek tobaccos, Turkish carpets, and Levantine silks, the fair attracted hundreds of thousands of buyers from across three continents, cementing Bari’s ancient role as the bridge between Occidental industry and Oriental trade.
Living Architectural Heritage of the Mediterranean
The monumental perimeter along Lungomare Starita, anchored by its triumphal entrance arch on Piazzale Vittorio Emanuele III, remains one of the largest and most cohesive ensembles of interwar exhibition architecture in the Mediterranean basin. Surmounting the destruction of the Second World War and hosting subsequent waves of international modernization, the fair continues to operate as an economic and cultural hub.
Today, visitors walking through its monumental colonnades encounter a living monument where regional identity, architectural ambition, and maritime commerce have engaged in continuous dialogue since 1929.
