The Crucible of the Berici: Ernesto Gresele and Specialty Steels in Vicenza, 1925

The mid-1920s witnessed an insatiable demand across northern Italy for precision metallurgical feedstocks. The burgeoning aircraft plants of Caproni, the locomotive shops of Breda, and the naval shipyards of Venice required stainless alloys immune to corrosion, thermal expansion, and mechanical shock. Ernesto Gresele (1892–1968) equipped his Vicenza works with advanced electric arc furnaces powered by Alpine hydroelectricity, enabling precise temperature governance and exacting slag deoxidation.

By mastering small-batch metallurgical recipe control, Valbruna produced bright bars, forged billets, and cold-drawn wire of peerless consistency. During the 1930s, the plant expanded along Viale della Scienza, becoming a key supplier to chemical processing plants, precision instrument makers, and food machinery fabricators.

Acciaierie Valbruna represents a remarkable continuity of family management: four successive generations of the Amenduni-Gresele family have maintained ownership and strategic focus, expanding the enterprise into North America and across Europe while keeping headquarters and primary specialty melting operations anchored in Vicenza.
