Pietro Annigoni was born in Milan on 7 June 1910. His family moved to Florence in 1925, and the city stayed his for the rest of his life: he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti with Felice Carena and made his debut in 1929. In 1947, with Gregorio Sciltian, he signed the manifesto of the Pittori moderni della realtà, a group that set itself against abstraction and went after the visible world down to the last detail.
