Timeless Mucha: The Magic of Line at the Museo Kaluz — Mexico City

Alphonse Mucha’s line, the flowing contour that made his Paris posters of the 1890s recognisable at a glance, arrives in Mexico City this autumn. From 8 October 2026 to 8 February 2027 the Museo Kaluz, in the Centro Histórico, hosts Timeless Mucha: The Magic of Line, an exhibition organised by the Mucha Foundation with more than a hundred works from the Mucha Trust Collection, the largest holding of the artist’s work in the world.

The exhibition, curated by Tomoko Sato of the Mucha Foundation, follows two threads. The first is Mucha himself: posters, drawings, book illustrations and designs, alongside pieces from his own collection, including the Japanese prints that fed his sense of outline. The second is what later generations did with that line: the psychedelic poster artists of the 1960s and 1970s, and the Japanese manga illustrators who rediscovered Mucha from the 1970s onwards. Mexico City is the last stop of a North American tour that opened at the Phillips Collection in Washington in 2025 and passed through Santa Fe, Boca Raton and Kansas City.

The Museo Kaluz opened in October 2020 in the former Hospicio de Santo Tomás de Villanueva, a building of 1790 on Avenida Hidalgo that spent much of the twentieth century as the Hotel de Cortés. Its own collection, assembled by the businessman Antonio del Valle Ruiz, is Mexican painting: landscape, genre scenes and still life from the nineteenth century to today.
