New Woman, New Vision. Women Photographers of the Bauhaus — Museum für Fotografie, Berlin

The Bauhaus school is remembered largely through its male masters, yet women trained there too — in the photography workshop above all, one of the few at the Bauhaus genuinely open to them. New Woman, New Vision. Women Photographers of the Bauhaus is the first exhibition to give that generation comprehensive attention: around 300 photographs by 29 women, drawn from the collection of the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung, Berlin, most trained at the original Bauhaus in Dessau and Berlin, a few at the New Bauhaus that opened in Chicago after the Nazi regime forced the German school to close in 1933.

Photographers on show include Gertrud Arndt, Marianne Brandt, Lotte Collein, Grit Kallin-Fischer, Ivana Meller-Tomljenović, Etel Mittag-Fodor, Lucia Moholy, Edith Tudor-Hart and Elsa Thiemann — figures whose work shaped the Bauhaus’s visual language of the 1920s and 30s but rarely carried their own names into its later histories. The exhibition is presented at the Museum für Fotografie, home to the Helmut Newton Stiftung, part of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
