Anniversary: The Miracle of the Sun at Fátima — October 13, 1917

On 13 October 1917, tens of thousands of people gathered in a field outside Fátima, Portugal, drawn by months of reports that three shepherd children were seeing the Virgin Mary there on the thirteenth of every month. Witnesses described the sun spinning and changing colour before the crowd, in ground and clothes that minutes before had been soaked by rain. The Sanctuary of Fátima now stands on the site, one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in the world.
