The feast of Saint Francis of Assisi falls on 4 October. Pope Gregory IX laid the foundation stone of the basilica in his honour the day after Francis’s canonisation in 1228, and by 1230 his body had already been moved inside. Between 1290 and 1295 the upper church received the fresco cycle attributed to Giotto — a sequence that changed what painting could do, on the walls of the church built for a man who had asked to be buried without one.
