On 18 January 1871, in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, Wilhelm I was proclaimed German Emperor before the assembled princes. The choice of room was the message: the palace of Louis XIV made to witness the birth of a rival empire. The ceremony lasted minutes; the hall has been charged ground for French and German memory ever since.
