Angelina

Under the arcades of the rue de Rivoli, across from the Tuileries, the tea house founded in 1903 by an Austrian confectioner still serves the two things it is named for everywhere: the hot chocolate and the Mont-Blanc.

At a glance

Angelina was founded in 1903 by Antoine Rumpelmayer, an Austrian confectioner already established on the Côte d’Azur and at Aix-les-Bains. The historic tea room stands at 226, rue de Rivoli, in the 1st arrondissement, and its reputation rests on two house specialities: the old-style hot chocolate known as l’Africain and the Mont-Blanc, the chestnut-cream pastry. The house belongs today to Bertrand Restauration, part of the Bertrand group.

Key facts

  • Founded: 1903, by Antoine Rumpelmayer
  • Where: 226, rue de Rivoli, 1st arrondissement, Paris — under the arcades facing the Tuileries garden
  • Known for: the hot chocolate l’Africain and the Mont-Blanc
  • Today: part of Bertrand Restauration (Bertrand group)

History

Rumpelmayer arrived in Paris with a name already made in the resort towns of the south, and gave the new salon the name of his daughter-in-law. The rue de Rivoli location placed it at the centre of fashionable Paris of the early twentieth century, and the tea room has remained in continuous use as one of the city’s best-known salons de thé, its Belle Époque interior part of the experience as much as the menu.
