A landmark mid-twentieth-century housing complex of eight steel-frame tower blocks that once dominated Glasgow’s northeast skyline before its demolition between 2010 and 2015.

The Red Road Flats stood between Balornock and Barmulloch in northeast Glasgow. Eight multi-storey blocks rose to heights of up to 89 metres (292 ft), their upper floors commanding panoramic views across the Campsie Fells, Ben Lomond, and the Arrochar Alps to the west. On clear days, the buildings were visible from ten miles away.
History
Constructed in the 1960s as part of Glasgow’s ambitious post-war housing programme, the Red Road Flats represented a bold approach to urban renewal. The estate was designed to accommodate 4,700 residents across its eight blocks. After decades of use, the complex entered a period of decline. In July 2008, the buildings were formally condemned. Phased demolition began in 2010 and concluded in 2015, erasing the complex from the Glasgow skyline.
What you see
The estate comprised two architectural typologies. Two “slab” blocks measured considerably wider in cross-section than in depth, while six “point” blocks adopted the more conventional tower form. The slabs rose 28 floors (26 occupiable, 2 mechanical); the point blocks reached 31 floors (30 occupiable, 1 mechanical). The point blocks held the record for the highest inhabitable floor and the highest floor count of any building constructed in Glasgow, second only to the former Bluevale and Whitevale Towers in height. The 28th floor of the slabs and 31st floor of the points served as communal drying areas.
Cultural significance
The Red Road Flats exemplified Glasgow’s post-war modernist ambitions and became one of the city’s most recognizable high-rise developments. The complex represented both the aspirations and ultimate challenges of large-scale public housing, becoming an enduring symbol of twentieth-century urban planning.
