Overview

The Nosedo plant is one of the largest wastewater purification facilities in Italy, treating the sewage of a substantial part of southern Milan before discharge into the Lambro river system. Its opening in 1999 was part of Milan’s effort to modernise its water infrastructure and improve environmental standards in the metropolitan area. The subsequent conversion of part of the facility into a gallery space represents a pioneering model of industrial reuse in northern Italy.

History

Planning for the Nosedo plant began in the late 1980s as part of a broader programme to address Milan’s chronic wastewater management challenges. The facility was built by the publicly owned utility MM S.p.A. and came into full operation in 1999. Eight years later, the decision was taken to open its remarkable industrial spaces to artists and the public, creating the Depur Art Lab Gallery as a cultural annex to an operating infrastructure site. The initiative attracted national and international attention as a model for merging environmental engineering with civic art programming.

What you see

Visitors encounter vast circular settling tanks, exposed pipework, and concrete treatment basins that form a striking industrial landscape on the southern Milan plain. The Depur Art Lab Gallery occupies repurposed service buildings within the plant, where whitewashed walls and high ceilings provide a neutral backdrop for rotating contemporary exhibitions. Guided tours lead through both the operational engineering areas and the gallery spaces, giving an unusually holistic view of the site. The surrounding grounds also feature open-air installations that respond to the scale and geometry of the purification infrastructure.

Cultural significance

Nosedo stands as a significant example of industrial heritage repurposing, demonstrating how infrastructure built for purely functional ends can acquire cultural and artistic dimensions without interrupting its core mission. The nearest public transport options are buses serving the Ronchetto delle Rane area from the Milan city centre; check ATM Milano for current routes.
