History
Fochabers and the surrounding Bog o’ Gight area maintained strong Catholic recusancy through the Gordon family of Gordon Castle, who preserved their Catholic faith from 1560 to 1728. Before St Mary’s was built, a chapel in the old village existed—one of the few structures spared when the Duke of Cumberland’s troops burned the area after the 1745 Jacobite rebellion.
The church’s construction began with the laying of the foundation stone in 1825 by Father George Mathieson, a native of Fochabers himself. He expressed hope that the completed building would be “an ornament to the town, and I hope draw respect to Religion.” Architect James Gillespie Graham’s design was finished by 1826.
What you see
The interior features a reredos installed in 1885 by Peter Paul Pugin, adding refinement to the chancel. Two stained glass windows by the renowned Munich firm Franz Mayer & Co. commemorate the Clapperton family—one depicting a paschal theme, the other Marian.
