History
Via Ariosto was laid out in the building boom that followed the clearance of the Spanish walls, and filled with apartment blocks for professional families between 1900 and 1910. Menni worked within the conventions of that market: the plan and the massing are those of any Milanese eclectic block of the late nineteenth century, and the novelty is carried entirely by the ornament.
What you see
The composition follows the standard Milanese scheme, with balconied windows on the first and third floors and the balcony of the piano nobile given comparatively sober decoration. Onto that frame Menni applied Liberty reliefs: female figures surrounding the space above the entrance portal, a band of decorative cement with plant forms running along the upper part of the first floor, and a crowning band at the top floor, again in cement, with reliefs of female figures. Inside, the stair carries a notable wrought-iron balustrade that begins from a lamp and unfolds in foliage.
Cultural significance
The house is a good measure of how far the new style actually penetrated. It is not a manifesto building: it is a conventional block wearing Liberty ornament, and there are hundreds like it in Milan. That is exactly why it matters — the style spread through the ordinary building trade, not only through the handful of famous commissions.
