A monumental conference and cultural centre opened in 1981 to celebrate the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state, the NDK remains one of Europe’s largest multifunctional venues.

The National Palace of Culture (NDK) is a sprawling conference and cultural complex in Sofia’s Triaditsa District. Spanning 123,000 square metres across eight floors and three underground levels, it hosts concerts, conferences, exhibitions, festivals and film screenings. In 2005, it was named the world’s best congress centre by the International Association of Congress Centres.
History
The project emerged from a suggestion by Lyudmila Zhivkova, daughter of communist leader Todor Zhivkov. Designed by a team led by architects Alexander Georgiev Barov and Ivan Kanazirev, the NDK opened on 31 March 1981 as a flagship cultural institution for the Bulgarian state.
During the 1990s, following Bulgaria’s political transition, the centre lost significant property and infrastructure. Since 2011, it has operated as a commercial company while remaining state-owned.
What you see
The building employs a unified visual language of geometric motifs, dark colours and monumental scale. Interior decoration showcases work by Bulgarian artists of the late twentieth century: dramatic murals, mosaics, sculptures, woodcarvings and metalwork define the public spaces.
Bulgaria Square, landscaped by a team led by Atanas Agura, forms the ceremonial forecourt. The complex contains multiple halls, extensive exhibition areas, lobbies and auxiliary spaces adapted to diverse cultural functions.
Cultural significance
The NDK embodies post-1981 Bulgarian cultural ambition and state identity. It hosts the annual Sofia International Film Festival and remains central to Bulgaria’s conference and events calendar. The building’s artistic programme represents a distinctive moment in twentieth-century Eastern European design.
