Beneath and Above the Seminary Church

MiC Košice — Potulky mestom has been opening the city’s closed doors to visitors since 2004, every month, telling the stories behind buildings people usually pass without entering. The December programme takes the longest church in Slovakia and goes both above and below it.

The Seminary church of St Anthony of Padua, better known in Košice as the Franciscan church, was begun after the fire of 1333 and finished in 1405. This walk opens two of the underground crypts — including the large one found in the 1990s — and climbs to the choir. Along the way: the Baroque altars, pews that came from the Cathedral of St Elizabeth, and the largest carved movable rosary in Slovakia.
