History
The site opened as “Schmargendorf” on the Berlin Ringbahn on 15 December 1883, initially serving steam and electric rail traffic. The U-Bahn station followed on 12 October 1913, designed by architect Wilhelm Leitgebel during Berlin’s era of ambitious underground expansion.
The station fell dormant in 1980 when S-Bahn service ceased; its entrance hall was reimagined as a nightclub. Full revival came on 17 December 1993, when direct integration with the U-Bahn and a name change to Heidelberger Platz restored its role as a major junction.
