Basilica of St. John the Baptist

A Romanesque Revival basilica in Berlin’s Neukölln district, built as a Catholic military cathedral and blessed in the presence of German imperial royalty.

At a glance

This red-brick basilica serves as the cathedral seat of the Military Ordinariate of Germany and stands adjacent to the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See. Completed in 1897, it remains one of Berlin’s significant early modern ecclesiastical buildings.

History

Construction began with the laying of the foundation stone in 1894. Architect August Menken designed the church as a Romanesque Revival structure modeled on Rhine Valley precedents. The solemn inauguration took place on May 8, 1897, attended by Emperor William II and Empress Augusta Victoria. Pope Pius X elevated the church to Minor Basilica status on December 3, 1906. From February 1, 2005, it became the official headquarters of the military ordinariate for the Federal Government.

What you see

Menken’s design draws from Romanesque architecture of the Rhine region, employing characteristic red brick and arched forms. The basilica plan reflects its liturgical purpose as a cathedral church for military worship.

Cultural significance

The basilica represents late 19th-century Catholic institutional presence in Berlin and reflects the close relationship between the German imperial state and the Church during that period. Its papal elevation affirmed its importance within the broader Catholic hierarchy.
