Overview

Tjuvholmen Sculpture Park is one of Oslo’s newest public art spaces, combining urban design with an international collection of contemporary sculpture in a striking waterfront setting. The park is freely accessible to the public and forms a cultural promenade along the Oslofjord shoreline. Together with the Astrup Fearnley Museum, it positions Tjuvholmen as Oslo’s most significant concentration of contemporary visual culture.

History

The Tjuvholmen peninsula was historically an industrial and harbour area of Oslo. Beginning in the 2000s, it was redeveloped as a mixed-use residential, commercial, and cultural quarter. The sculpture park was integral to the planning of the new district, with works commissioned and acquired to populate the public spaces around the Astrup Fearnley Museum. The Renzo Piano-designed museum building, opened in 2012, provided the architectural focus for the cultural precinct.

What you see

The park displays a selection of contemporary sculptures by international artists positioned along waterfront walkways, plazas, and green spaces. Works range from monumental abstract pieces to figurative and conceptual installations, each sited in dialogue with the surrounding architecture and the water. The setting — with views across the Oslofjord and the Oslo Opera House — provides one of the most scenically striking backdrops for contemporary art in Northern Europe.

Cultural significance

Tjuvholmen Sculpture Park represents a successful model of integrating public art into urban regeneration, attracting both Oslo residents and international visitors to a formerly inaccessible industrial waterfront. It exemplifies Norway’s strong tradition of public investment in contemporary art and design.
