History
The synagogue was built to serve the Reform Jewish congregation of Smíchov in the mid-nineteenth century. In 1931, architects undertook a comprehensive modernisation, redesigning the building in the Functionalist idiom then reshaping Central European architecture. The Nazi occupation devastated Prague’s Jewish communities; the Smíchov congregation was destroyed in the Shoah. After 1945, the building entered secular use. In 1990, it received designation as a National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic. Since 1998, it has functioned as an archive of the Jewish Museum in Prague, preserving historical documents and artefacts.
