Saint John the Baptist Parish Church (Dambanang Kawayan)

A Roman Catholic parish church in Taguig with roots reaching to the 16th century, formally established in its present form in 1969 under the patronage of Saint John the Baptist.

At a glance

The Dambanang Kawayan—meaning “bamboo church” in Tagalog—serves Barangay Ligid-Tipas in Taguig City. Originally established in 1573, the parish was formally erected under its current dedication on November 17, 1969, by Cardinal Rufino Jiao Santos.

History

The church’s origins trace to 1573, when it was established in the locality of Tipas. Initially administered by the Immaculate Conception Parish of Pasig, the church later came under the Shrine of Saint Anne in Santa Ana, Taguig City.

On November 17, 1969, Cardinal Rufino Jiao Santos formally erected the independent Parish of Saint John the Baptist, with Rev. Fr. Ruben “Ben” J. Villote appointed as its first parish priest. The locality’s name, “Tipas,” derives from “Tinagpas” or “Tiga-gapas,” reflecting the agrarian heritage of its original inhabitants.

The parish remained part of the Archdiocese of Manila from 1969 to 2003. It currently belongs to the Vicariate of Saint Anne under the Diocese of Pasig.
