SICHANG ISLAND, THAILAND · LATE 19TH CENTURY
Phra Chuthathut Palace

A former royal summer residence on Sichang Island, this palace was built for King Chulalongkorn the Great but abandoned after French occupation in 1893. Today it serves as a marine science research station and museum.

At a glance

Also known as Sichang Palace, this structure was commissioned as a royal retreat on an island in Chonburi Province. Though never fully completed, it remains a tangible link to Thailand’s colonial-era history and architectural ambitions.

History

King Chulalongkorn the Great built this summer residence on Sichang Island during his reign. The palace’s history shifted dramatically in 1893 when France occupied the island during territorial disputes over Laos. Following this occupation, the royal family abandoned the residence.

In a remarkable act of salvage, portions of the unfinished halls were dismantled and repurposed for the construction of Vimanmek Mansion in Bangkok. Over subsequent decades, the palace passed through various hands and uses. Chulalongkorn University eventually took control, converting it into the “Sichang Marine Science Research and Training Station” and establishing an on-site museum dedicated to its preservation.

What you see

The palace represents an incomplete vision of royal architecture. Visitors encounter unfinished halls and structures that speak to the abrupt halt in construction. The remains offer insight into late-19th-century Thai royal building practices, even as significant portions were removed for reuse elsewhere.

Cultural significance

Phra Chuthathut Palace embodies a pivotal moment in Thai history—the intersection of royal ambition, foreign pressure, and national adaptation. Its incomplete state and transformation into a research facility reflect Thailand’s pragmatic response to geopolitical challenges while maintaining cultural heritage.
