On Nkrumah Road, at the junction with Nyerere Road, in the Makadara district of Mombasa, Holy Ghost Cathedral is the seat of the Catholic archdiocese of Mombasa. The Catholic mission in the city was founded in 1889 by Father Alexandre Le Roy, of the Holy Ghost Fathers (Spiritans), with the first baptism celebrated on 14 August of that year. Land was bought at Makadara in 1898, where a first chapel rose, completed for Easter Sunday of the same year. The present cathedral, in Romanesque Revival style, was designed by the Spiritan brother Gustave Walter, assisted in the construction by the brothers Kilian Rettig and Claver Fernandes. Sources differ slightly on the chronology: a specialist journal places the approval of the plans in 1914 and the start of work in 1916, during the First World War, while Wikipedia and Wikidata date plans and completion to 1919 and 1923 respectively. An article in the Kenyan daily The Star of May 2023, on the centenary, confirms 1923 as the completion year recognised today by the institution itself. The building, in coral stone, was built with a roof designed to recall that of Westminster Cathedral in London, while the marble altar and the tabernacle were carved in Toulouse, France; some local residents were trained in stoneworking during the construction. The diocese of Mombasa became a diocese in its own right, with its own bishop, in 1955; the date of its elevation to an archdiocese is not confirmed by the sources consulted. In 1997 the cathedral was declared a national monument of Kenya under the cultural heritage law. It should be distinguished from the Anglican cathedral of Mombasa, the “Memorial Cathedral”, a different building a few hundred metres away, consecrated in 1905 and dedicated to the memory of the missionary bishop James Hannington, killed in Uganda in 1885. The two cathedrals, of different denominations, are sometimes confused in some online tourist sources, a mistake to avoid.
