History
Palazzo Belmonte Riso takes its name from the noble Sicilian family that rebuilt it in the late 18th century, though the site has medieval origins. The palace passed through various hands over the centuries and suffered damage during the Allied bombardments of Palermo in World War II. After decades of institutional use and gradual restoration, the Regional Government of Sicily transformed it into RISO, inaugurating the museum in 2007 as a centrepiece of Palermo’s cultural renaissance. The project was part of a broader regional effort to restore historic city-centre palaces to public use.

The building presents a stately neoclassical facade on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, with a monumental entrance portal opening onto a colonnaded courtyard. Inside, the restored piano nobile rooms provide elegant gallery spaces that contrast deliberately with the contemporary works displayed within them. The museum’s permanent collection focuses on Sicilian artists from the 1960s onward, complemented by acquisitions of international contemporary work. Upper-floor terraces offer views over Palermo’s roofscape toward the sea.
