History
The building’s commercial origins date to its function as a grain storage and merchant house. From the 1830s onward, it was adapted for communications purposes, operating as a horse post station and inn according to plans by Joseph Poussier. Its scale and importance grew to make it one of Europe’s largest post stations. By the late 19th century, the Kaunas City Museum also occupied the building, sharing the space with postal operations.
The Second World War brought dramatic change. Soviet aviation forces commandeered the building after 1945 and held it for decades. Following Lithuania’s independence movement, the structure was returned to civilian use in the 1990s and handed to the Kaunas Association of Communications Companies, which initiated comprehensive reconstruction based on architect Saulė Mickevičienė’s design. The Communication History Museum opened to the public in March 1994.
