History
The Siege of Plevna (1877–78) was pivotal to the Russian-Turkish War and Bulgaria’s independence. The city’s defenders held off Russian forces for months, making it one of the deadliest engagements of the conflict. The siege ultimately contributed to Ottoman defeat and Bulgaria’s emergence as a nation.
The panorama was constructed to mark the 100th anniversary of these events. Officially unveiled on 10 December 1977, it expanded the existing Skobelev Park, which stands on the site of three of the four major battles that secured Bulgarian liberation. Within its first three years, the panorama attracted 2.5 million visitors.
