Svetlin Rusev Donative Exhibition
A permanent collection of over 400 works spanning Bulgarian modernism to European masters, housed in a historic Pleven bathhouse from the 1900s.

This exhibition occupies a three-storey Neo-Byzantine and Neo-Moorish building that once served as Pleven’s public baths. The collection assembles Bulgarian artists from the early 20th century alongside European names including Picasso, Goya, Rodin and Dalí.
History
The building itself was constructed in the 1900s to designs by architect Nikola Lazarov, who synthesized Neo-Byzantine, Neo-Moorish and Ottoman vocabulary. For seven decades it functioned as the city’s primary public baths until closure in 1970.
Bulgarian artist and collector Svetlin Rusev donated 322 works from his collection in 1984, establishing the exhibition. He augmented the gift with 82 additional pieces in 1999.
What you see
Lazarov’s eclecticism defines the exterior and interior spaces. The first floor displays early Bulgarian modernists—Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, Tsanko Lavrenov, Kiril Petrov and others who shaped 20th-century Bulgarian art. Works by Vladimir Dimitrov and Dechko Uzunov anchor this collection.
The second storey surveys contemporary Bulgarian painting through artists such as Nikola Manev and Vesa Vasileva, while also preserving a 17th-century French painting of unknown authorship and Josef Bauer’s Vienna Secession work.
The tower galleries on the third floor house engravings by Ilia Beshkov, Vladimir Dimitrov and Sidoniya Atanasova alongside European prints and drawings. Small sculptures by Rodin and Degas share space with works by Chagall, Renoir, Delacroix and other Western masters.
Cultural significance
The collection represents a personal vision of Bulgarian heritage positioned within the European canon. By housing contemporary work alongside Old Masters in a repurposed public building, the exhibition democratizes access to art while honoring both local innovation and international dialogue.
