History
Boris I commissioned the basilica after his own baptism in 864, which triggered the Christianization of Bulgaria. Built to completion around 875, the complex marked the official establishment of Christian authority in the realm. The construction of such a monumental cathedral so soon after the nation’s conversion reflected both the knyaz’s commitment to the new faith and his desire to consolidate centralised power through religious architecture.
