Varna Aquarium

History
Prince Ferdinand I initiated the aquarium’s foundation on 6 January 1906 at Euxinograd palace, tasking Doctor Parashkev Stoyanov with establishing a maritime biological station. Ferdinand sought counsel from Anton Dohrn, founder of Naples’ Stazione Zoologica, obtaining blueprints and photographs to guide the project. The foundation stone was laid on 22 October 1906 in a ceremonial gathering attended by the royal family and prominent statesmen.
Construction progressed steadily, yet historical upheavals postponed the opening. The Balkan Wars (1912), World War I, and punitive post-war sanctions delayed inauguration until 1932, when Tsar Boris III formally opened the station. During this lengthy hiatus, the building housed army units, refugees, and vocational schools.

The edifice exemplifies early 20th-century institutional design, clad in neoclassical restraint. A substantial bas-relief of a clam ornaments the facade, accompanied by smaller sculptural reliefs depicting characteristic Black Sea fauna. The interior accommodates exhibition galleries, research laboratories, and the institute’s specialized library.
