Enmore Theatre
Sydney’s longest-running live theatre, this Art Deco venue has hosted everyone from Bob Dylan to international touring bands since opening as a photo-play house in 1912.
At a glance
Built in 1908 and first opened in 1912, the Enmore Theatre stands at 118–132 Enmore Road in Newtown, inner-west Sydney. Originally operated by the Szarka Brothers theatre family, it remains a cultural anchor for live performance across music, comedy, theatre and dance. The venue holds 1,700 seated guests or 2,500 standing.
History
The theatre opened its doors in 1912 as a photo-play venue under the Szarka Brothers, a prominent theatre family of the era. In 1937, architect Charles Bohringer undertook a significant remodelling that established the building’s distinctive Art Deco character. The theatre has undergone numerous renovations and changes of ownership since, with Century Venues as its current proprietor. From cinema screenings to concert halls, its programming has evolved with audience tastes while maintaining its role as a neighbourhood gathering place.
What you see
The Enmore’s Art Deco style, refined in Bohringer’s 1937 redesign, defines its visual identity. It is Sydney’s only theatre from the Art Deco movement surviving in its original condition. The interwar aesthetic—characteristic of the late 1930s and early 1940s suburban theatre design—remains legible in the building’s detailing and proportions.
Cultural significance
The theatre illustrates the development of suburban theatres in the late 1930s and early 1940s and holds social significance for the local community. Its century-long run as a live performance venue makes it a continuous thread in Sydney’s cultural fabric. The Office of Environment and Heritage recognises its architectural and community importance.
