Shandong Museum
One of China’s largest museums, housing over 210,000 artifacts spanning from Neolithic cultures to the Qing dynasty, plus significant natural history specimens including a Shantungosaurus skeleton.

The Shandong Museum occupies 82,900 square meters in Jinan’s Lixia District. Its collection spans prehistoric pottery and bronze vessels to classical paintings, with a notable natural history section featuring Shanwang fossils and the skeletal remains of Shantungosaurus, a Cretaceous dinosaur.
History
The institution traces its roots to 1887, when British Baptist missionary John Sutherland Whitewright established the Yidu Museum in Qingzhou. Relocated to Jinan in 1904 and renamed Guangzhi Yuan, the museum expanded in 1942 to the Red Swastika Society compound on Shangxin Street.
The Shandong Provincial Museum was formally founded in 1954, splitting its collections between the compound (historical artifacts) and the Guangzhi Yuan building (natural history). A new facility opened in October 1992. The current museum, significantly larger, broke ground in December 2007 on Yaojia Street and welcomed the public on November 16, 2010, with its name simplified to Shandong Museum.

The modern museum building accommodates comprehensive collections across multiple galleries. Neolithic ceramics from the Dawenkou and Longshan cultures anchor the prehistoric section. Bronze vessels and weapons from the Shang and Zhou dynasties showcase metallurgical mastery, while Han dynasty stone carvings demonstrate sculptural refinement.
Later galleries display landscape paintings and calligraphy from the Ming and Qing periods. The natural history galleries present Cenozoic-era fossils from Shanwang and the skeleton of Shantungosaurus, a large hadrosaurid that inhabited this region during the late Cretaceous.

The Shandong Museum documents the material culture of one of China’s most historically significant provinces. Its collections illustrate continuity from Neolithic settlement through imperial dynasties, offering insight into technological, artistic, and spiritual development. The natural history component reveals the region’s Mesozoic paleontological heritage.
