History
As Merano flourished under the patronage of Empress Elisabeth of Austria and wealthy aristocrats seeking cure in its mountain air, civic leaders recognized the need for cultural facilities befitting their distinguished visitors. Martin Dülfer received the commission to design a modern theatre. Construction was completed in 1899, with the official inauguration on December 1, 1900. Following World War I and the territory’s transfer from Austria-Hungary to Italy, the Italians renamed it after composer Giacomo Puccini, who visited the town in 1923. The theatre declined after the Second World War but was revived and renovated following a destructive fire in 1978.
