Tarrytown Music Hall
A rare survivor among American theaters: a brick Queen Anne jewel that opened its doors to motion pictures in 1901 and continues to host world-class musicians and recording artists.
At a glance
Built in the late 19th century on West Main Street, this brick structure represents one of Westchester County’s finest applications of Queen Anne design. It remains the oldest theater in the county still operating as a theater and belongs to an elite group—fewer than 6% of pre-1900 American theaters survive today.
History
The Music Hall opened as one of the first theaters in the nation to embrace motion pictures in 1901, a pivotal moment in entertainment history. For decades it thrived as a cultural venue, hosting legendary performers including Dave Brubeck, Louis Armstrong, and Miles Davis. The theater fell into decline and closed in 1976 due to neglect and structural deterioration. A local not-for-profit organization purchased and restored it following its 1980 listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The hall reopened a few years later and has remained active ever since, undergoing further renovations and hosting continued performances and recordings.
What you see
The Music Hall exemplifies Queen Anne style in its brick construction and ornamental detailing. Its interior acoustics are exceptionally fine, making it an ideal venue for classical music recording—a distinction that has drawn performers and engineers for generations.
Cultural significance
The theater stands as a testament to America’s vaudeville and early cinema era. Its preservation demonstrates the power of community commitment: rescued from demolition by a local not-for-profit, it continues to serve as a working cultural landmark. Its appearance in films and television commercials has extended its cultural reach beyond live performance.
