Built in 1930, this historic farmers’ market and retail building served as the commercial heart of Fort Worth, housing grocers, bakers, butchers and produce vendors in a single architecturally distinguished structure. Its distinctive multi-colored tile roof and terracotta detailing remain hallmarks of early twentieth-century regional design.
History
Developer John J. Harden, an Oklahoma native, commissioned architect B. Gaylord Noftsger—also from Oklahoma City—to design the market. Completed at a cost of $150,000, the building opened to the public on June 20, 1930. At its peak, the market accommodated 145 farmer and vendor stalls alongside 30 permanent retail shops, anchoring Fort Worth’s commercial life through the Depression and beyond.
R.C. Bowen of Bowen Properties acquired the building in 1944. A fire damaged a rear shed in 2010. Oil and gas entrepreneur Bob Simpson purchased the property in 2012, then sold it to MC Estates in 2014.
What you see
The market’s most striking feature is its polychromatic glazed tile roof, combining terracotta and multi-colored ceramic work across the structure. A central tower rises above the street façade, decorated with terracotta columns and pilasters that frame shop windows and entrances. The ornamental detailing reflects Art Deco sensibilities adapted to commercial vernacular architecture of the 1930s.
