Protestant Church Wilnsdorf

A striking Jugendstil church in North Rhine-Westphalia, completed in 1913 to serve merged Protestant parishes in the industrial Rhineland.

At a glance

This early 20th-century church exemplifies Jugendstil design, the German Art Nouveau movement. Built from bossage ashlar (rusticated stone blocks), it seats 540 and features a steeple integrated into one side of the façade. The building became a listed monument in 1977 for its architectural significance.

History

The original Protestant church, erected in 1791, proved inadequate after three parishes merged in 1892. Following planning from 1904 onwards, architect Gustav Mucke designed this replacement in 1911. Consecrated on 20 April 1913, the church served as the principal place of worship when additional parishes consolidated in 2010 and 2011, forming the Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirchengemeinde Rödgen-Wilnsdorf (Reformed Parish).

What you see

The church employs Jugendstil principles through bossage-stone construction and dynamic façade composition. Mucke retained liturgical elements from its 1791 predecessor: the organ, pulpit and altar remain positioned in relationship to one another. Paul Faust of Barmen built the first organ (1913), featuring two manuals and twelve stops, partly incorporating pipes salvaged from the earlier church. A more substantial organ by Orgelbau Mebold, with 22 stops, was installed in 1988.

Cultural significance

The church stands as a representative work of Jugendstil religious architecture in the Rhineland. Its design bridges tradition and modernity—respecting liturgical continuity while embracing contemporary aesthetic principles. The 2013 centenary celebration reaffirmed this continuity, repeating the original consecration hymn and sermon text.
