Courtyard Nashville Downtown

A twelve-story Neo-Classical landmark that claimed the title of Nashville’s first skyscraper when completed in 1904, now restored as a contemporary hotel.

At a glance

This iconic 1904 bank building represents a pivotal moment in Nashville’s urban development. Designed by the architectural firm Barnett, Hayes and Barnett, it rose as the city’s tallest structure upon completion and has remained a defining presence on the downtown skyline ever since.

History

The First National Bank of Nashville was organized in 1863, but the landmark building housing its operations was not completed until 1904. Over the following decades, the structure passed through multiple institutional tenants: it became the Independent Life Insurance Company Building, then the Third National Bank, which in 1936 added a twelve-story air-conditioned extension and installed a new façade. The Third National Bank name remains emblazoned on the building’s western and northern walls.

The J.C. Bradford Company occupied the offices from 1968 to 1986. After their departure, the building sat vacant for more than a decade until its restoration and conversion to hotel use in 1997.

What you see

The building’s Neo-Classical design defines its visual character. The 1936 extension and façade refresh modernized the structure while preserving its essential proportions and presence. The signage of the Third National Bank remains a historical layer on the exterior walls, marking the building’s institutional past.

Cultural significance

As Nashville’s first skyscraper, this building marks a turning point in the city’s architectural and economic history. Its completion signified Nashville’s emergence as a modern metropolitan center during the early twentieth century.
