Les Planes Railway Station

A modernista masterpiece hidden in the Serra de Collserola hills, this Art Nouveau station opened as the northern terminus of Barcelona’s commuter rail to the Vallès—and remains Catalonia’s only railway station in the style.

At a glance

Les Planes station serves the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district of Barcelona via lines S1 and S2 of the Metro del Vallès commuter network. Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya operates both the system and the station. The building, dating to 1916, is an architectural rarity: Catalonia’s sole railway station executed in the modernista style.

History

Les Planes opened in 1916 as the northern terminus of the first section of the Barcelona–Vallès Line, connecting Peu del Funicular station to the Vallès region. The modernista station building was purpose-built for this new commuter route, serving a transit corridor through the hills north of the city.

What you see

The station features three tracks, with a terminal track accessible only from the south and two through tracks. Four platform faces serve the configuration; the island platform between the through tracks handles regular passenger traffic and is reached by footbridge, stairs, and lifts. The station building itself exemplifies Catalan Art Nouveau design, its ornamental detailing and proportions marking it as a distinguished work of early-twentieth-century transport architecture.

Cultural significance

Les Planes holds unique status in Catalan railway heritage as the only station of its kind executed in modernista style. It represents both the expansion of Barcelona’s commuter infrastructure into the Vallès and the region’s embrace of Art Nouveau aesthetics in everyday structures during the early 1900s.
