History
The Theatre Royal opened on this site in 1732, initially functioning as a playhouse. Ballet arrived in 1734, followed a year later by opera—George Frideric Handel’s inaugural season. Many of Handel’s works were composed specifically for Covent Garden and premiered there.
Two catastrophic fires—in 1808 and 1856—destroyed successive buildings. The current structure is the third theatre on the site. Its distinctive Victorian character derives from the façade, foyer, and auditorium constructed in 1858, though nearly all other elements date from comprehensive reconstruction during the 1990s.

The main auditorium rises through four tiers of boxes and balconies, crowned by an amphitheatre gallery. The proscenium measures 14.80 metres wide, matching the stage depth, with a height of 12.20 metres.
