History
Opera arrived in Budapest through touring companies in the early 19th century. A turning point came in 1835 when part of the Kasa National Opera and Theatrical Troupe established themselves in Buda, performing at the Castle Theatre under conductor Ferenc Erkel. By 1837, the ensemble had moved to the Magyar Színház, which became the Nemzeti Színház (National Theatre) by 1840.
Construction of a dedicated opera house began in 1875. The building opened to the public on 27 September 1884, immediately attracting acclaim. The company quickly built a reputation for excellence, mounting 45 to 50 operas annually with approximately 130 performances each year.
The venue became host to the Budapest Opera Ball, a prominent society event that began in 1886 and continues to the present day.
