Tamaudun
A royal mausoleum of the Second Shō Dynasty, Tamaudun preserves the burial traditions and architectural heritage of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Tamaudun is one of three royal mausoleums built during the Second Shō Dynasty. Constructed in 1501 by King Shō Shin, it stands near Shuri Castle as a monument to the kingdom’s royal lineage and reflects Ryukyuan funerary practices of the period.
History
King Shō Shin, the third sovereign of the Second Shō Dynasty (reigned 1477–1527), commissioned Tamaudun in 1501 to serve as the burial place of his father, King Shō En. The mausoleum was constructed a short distance from Shuri Castle, the political center of the kingdom. Tamaudun became one of three designated royal burial sites alongside Urasoe yōdore at Urasoe Castle and Izena Tamaudun near Izena Castle. The complex received National Historic Site designation in 1972 and was named a National Treasure in 2018. On December 2, 2000, UNESCO inscribed it as part of the collective heritage site Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.
