Shazdeh Garden
A masterwork of Persian garden design, this five-hectare Qajar-era sanctuary near Mahan combines geometric precision with the timeless interplay of water, stone, and vegetation that defines the Islamic garden tradition.
At a glance
Shazdeh Garden spans 5.5 hectares in a strict rectangular plan, anchored by water channels and fountains that flow from a two-storey residential structure at its upper end down to the entrance gate below. The entire composition is enclosed by protective walls, creating an intimate retreat in Kerman province’s arid landscape.
History
Built during the Qajar period, Shazdeh Garden represents the enduring Persian tradition of garden-making as both practical refuge and philosophical expression. In June 2011, UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site alongside other significant Persian gardens, recognizing its exemplary design and historical importance.
What you see
The garden’s rectangular geometry and axial layout reflect classical Islamic garden principles. Water—channelled from source to gate—creates living galleries of fountains and basins that punctuate the descent. At the upper terminus stands a two-storey residence; at the lower end, an entrance pavilion frames the visitor’s approach.
Cultural significance
Shazdeh Garden exemplifies the Persian chahar bagh (fourfold garden) concept, wherein geometry, water, plantings, and architecture unite to create earthly paradise. It demonstrates how desert gardeners deployed irrigation and design to transform harsh terrain into spaces of beauty and contemplation.
