Numinbah Nature Reserve
A subtropical rainforest sanctuary straddling the New South Wales–Queensland border, protecting part of an ancient volcanic landscape and critical habitat for threatened bird species.
At a glance
Numinbah Nature Reserve spans 858 hectares across the Northern Rivers region of eastern Australia. The reserve sits within the Mount Warning/Tweed caldera, a geological feature central to the landscape’s dramatic topography and ecological character.
History
The reserve was gazetted in December 1981, establishing formal protection for the region’s natural heritage. An expansion in 1989 brought the reserve to its current area, reflecting growing recognition of the site’s conservation importance.
What you see
The landscape is dominated by the Shield Volcano formation, part of the Mount Warning/Tweed caldera system. Dense subtropical rainforest blankets the terrain, with the reserve positioned northeast of the rural locality of Numinbah and south of Queensland’s Springbrook, defining a portion of the state border between New South Wales and Queensland.
Cultural significance
Numinbah is part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, inscribed in 1986 and added to the Australian National Heritage List in 2007.
