A 8,080-hectare rainforest reserve in northern New South Wales, established after grassroots campaigns to protect old-growth forest from logging.

Nightcap National Park protects a significant section of the Gondwana Rainforests, one of Australia’s most biodiverse ecosystems. Located 35 kilometres north of Lismore in the Northern Rivers region, the park encompasses intact subtropical rainforest and forms part of a World Heritage Site recognised for its ecological and geological importance.
History
The park was established in April 1983 following a pivotal conservation campaign. Between 1979 and 1982, environmental activists conducted blockades and protests against logging at Terania Creek, Grier’s Scrub and Mount Nardi—actions that ultimately led to the government’s decision to protect the area. Additional sections of the Whian Whian state forest were incorporated following further campaigning and blockading in 1998, expanding the reserve’s boundaries.

The landscape comprises subtropical rainforest typical of the Gondwana region, with complex forest structure and dense vegetation. Mount Nardi and other elevated terrain within the park offer vantage points across the Northern Rivers landscape.

Nightcap holds dual importance as both a nature reserve and a landmark in Australian conservation history. The successful campaigns that led to its establishment demonstrated the power of grassroots environmental activism and helped shift national attitudes toward rainforest protection. The park is part of the Shield Volcano Group of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Site, recognised for its outstanding universal value.
