Naseong City Wall
The defensive walls of Sabi, capital of the Baekje kingdom, stand as fragmented testimony to one of Korea’s ancient three kingdoms. Built around the 6th century, these ramparts guarded a thriving metropolis that shaped East Asian history.

Naseong City Wall is a Baekje-era fortification in Buyeo County, South Chungcheong Province. Designated a Historic Site of South Korea in 1963, it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Baekje Historic Areas, recognizing the kingdom’s cultural significance.
History
The walls were built possibly around 538 to defend Sabi, the capital of Baekje. Construction occurred just before the city’s establishment, with ongoing fortification as the settlement expanded and consolidated power. Over centuries, Sabi emerged as a center of administration and culture during Baekje’s reign.
Systematic excavation of the wall began in 1991. More than 30 excavations have been conducted thereafter, revealing details of construction methods and the city’s layout.
What you see
The walls were designed to encircle the entire city, but today only the northern and eastern sections survive. The known sections measure approximately 6.6 kilometers in length, beginning at the north gate of the fortress Busosanseong and extending southeast and south.
No physical evidence remains of the western and southern wall sections. Visible remains document the engineering strategies employed to protect Baekje’s capital from invasion.
Cultural significance
Naseong represents a pivotal moment in Korean history, when Baekje was consolidating territorial control and refining administrative systems. The walls embody the kingdom’s military sophistication and urban planning capabilities. As part of the Baekje Historic Areas UNESCO designation, Naseong contributes to our understanding of Korea’s Three Kingdoms period and its influence on regional civilization.
