Nakijin Castle

The former royal seat of Hokuzan, one of three principalities that dominated medieval Okinawa. This Ryūkyūan fortress now attracts visitors for its rare Hikan cherry blossoms, which bloom earlier each year than anywhere else in Japan.

At a glance

Nakijin Castle was the capital fortress of the northern Okinawan principality of Hokuzan from the late 14th century onward. Built as a gusuku—a traditional Ryūkyūan stone fortification—it stands as a testament to the island’s independent kingdoms before unification under the Ryukyu Kingdom.

History

In the late 14th century, Okinawa was divided among three powerful principalities: Nanzan in the south, Chūzan in the central region, and Hokuzan in the north. Nakijin Castle served as the administrative and military center of Hokuzan, housing the King of Hokuzan. The fortress remained significant until the broader consolidation of Ryūkyūan power. It was designated a National Historic Site by the central government in 1972, and in November 2000 received recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, registered alongside other Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu, including the ruins of Shuri Castle.

What you see

The castle exemplifies gusuku architecture, characterized by dry-stone fortification walls built without mortar. These structures were engineered to withstand both military assault and the subtropical climate of Okinawa. The site layout reflects the strategic positioning typical of medieval Ryūkyūan fortresses, situated to command the surrounding landscape.

Cultural significance

Nakijin Castle embodies the historical independence and architectural traditions of the Ryukyu Kingdom before its integration into Japanese administration. Today it is celebrated throughout Japan for the Hikan cherry blossoms that bloom on its grounds between mid-January and early February—the earliest cherry blossoms in the entire nation.
