Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park comprises the remains of three ancient municipalities arrayed across the landscape: Mueang Chakangrao, the historic town centre east of the Ping River; Mueang Nakhon Chum to the west; and Mueang Trai Trueng, situated approximately 18 km southwest. Together they form part of the UNESCO-designated Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns.
History
Chakangrao served as the ancient capital of Kamphaeng Phet, organized according to urban principles shared with contemporary Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai. The town followed a hierarchical zoning system, segregating religious structures into dedicated precincts both within and beyond the settlement’s formal boundaries. A rectangular fortified town area, bounded by city walls and fortifications, measured 300–700 metres in width and 2,200 metres in length.
What you see
The eastern zone at Chakangrao features large structures built primarily of laterite, reflecting monumental ambitions. In contrast, the western religious sites at Nakhon Chum employ brick construction and display more modest proportions, suggesting functional or economic distinctions between the two sectors. Fortification walls define the rectangular town plan, their ruins still traceable across the terrain.
Cultural significance
Kamphaeng Phet illuminates the spatial organization and architectural practices of medieval Siamese cities during the Sukhothai period. The park’s three centres demonstrate continuity in urban planning ideology across the region while revealing local variations in material choice and scale. Its UNESCO designation recognizes the park’s role in understanding the cultural flowering of early Thai civilization.
