History
Designed by convict architect Francis Greenway, the barracks were constructed to accommodate convict men and boys—a purpose it fulfilled for decades. The site evolved significantly over time, adapting to serve as a hospital, the Royal Mint’s Sydney branch, a courthouse, and various administrative functions. Following an $18 million restoration project that began in January 2019, the barracks reopened in February 2020 with an expanded visitor experience.
